This book was created in conjunction with an exhibition and project by Xapiri Ground, in co-creation with artist Davis Torres and the Shipetiari Native Community, realized over the course of two years beginning in May of 2023. The aim was to create a visual representation of traditional Matsigenka iconography and storytelling through a collaborative mural project, which would inspire a revival of the sharing of these stories between Matsigenka elders and young people, and foster an appreciation of the community among visitors.
The featured images are creative interpretations by the artist Davis Torres of Xapiri Ground (Cusco, Peru), which link the ancestral stories of the Matsigenka people with their natural and graphic origins.
